Webinar | Food For Thought: Crops for the Future?

Virtual webinar (Zoom)
October 14, 2020

Event time: October 14, 2020 - 11:00am - 12:00pm

If the challenges of adding value to locally-grown produce are met, there is huge potential in Wales for a thriving horticulture industry.  Successful innovation in horticulture will require coordination and collaboration between Wales' vast array of producers.

We are delighted to host a panel of eminent experts in the field for our next webinar, focusing on the future of horticulture in Wales, specifically genetic conservation and protecting local produce.

In what promises to be a wide-ranging discussion, we will cover topics such as:

  • best practice in growing quality crops
  • genetic conservation
  • crop sustainability in the face of climate change
  • strengthening the food and drink sector in Wales
  • Welsh food tourism

As well as some practical tips shared on how you can protect and enhance produce, we'll explore and discuss what the future has in store for protected Welsh produce.

Our panellists will highlight and share their experiences of projects and schemes which already exist across Wales, advising on and inspiring further research and development in the fields of outdoor as well as indoor growing.

Biodiversity conservation protects plant, animal, microbial and genetic resources for food production, agriculture and ecosystem functions.  We hope to inform and inspire future research for sustainable produce whilst highlighting emerging products and trends.

At AberInnovation we aim to attract R&D projects to Wales which open up innovation in horticulture and dramatically reduces the decline in biodiversity. There will be an opportunity to view our facilities in a virtual tour format during the session.

In association with Horticulture Wales, panellist include; Dr Danny Thorgood, IBERS (Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth University), Fay Francis, Provenance & GI Consultancy Ltd & Chris Charters, Welsh Perry and Cider Society.
