Three business affiliated with AberInnovation have been shortlisted for prestigious Wales Start-Up Awards where winners will be announced in Cardiff on 9 September 2021.

The nominations are as follows:

ARCITEKBio, Green Start-Up of the Year

Yma, Social Enterprise Start-Up of the Year

Starfish Labs, Innovative Start-Up of the Year and Mobile and Emerging Technologies Start Up of the Year

Both ARCITEKBio and Yma are residents of the AberInnovation Incubator while Starfish Labs – bagging two nominations – are virtual members of the Campus family.

Neil Bevan, Director at Starfish Labs, said: “The Starfish Labs team are excited to have been shortlisted in two categories in this year’s Wales Start-Up Awards. To be recognised in both Innovative Start Up of the Year and Mobile and Emerging Technologies Start Up of the Year is testament to our team’s commitment during a difficult time to have started a business.

Being based at AberInnovation was instrumental in us being able to recruit an Aberystwyth University graduate during the last 12 months as one of our first employees, retaining talent within Wales.”

The Wales Start-Up Awards were established in 2016 and are the only awards in the UK that focus specifically on celebrating the success of new businesses and recognise business successes across all sectors and all parts of Wales.

The awards were forced online in 2020 due to the pandemic but hopes remain high that the 2021 awards can return to their home at the Depot in Cardiff.

It’s not only AberInnovation-affiliated businesses that are flying the flag for Aberystwyth either. Fresh on the heels of their Head Chef appearing on the BBC’s Great British Menu, restaurant SY23 are nominated for High Street Start-Up of the Year and Olew, producers of a range of haircare products are shortlisted for Online Retail Start-Up of the Year.
